RE-READ this book due to the fact that a review wasn't left after the first reading. One very great book and one I didn't mind reading again, not whatsoever. J.R. Jackson has done one tremendous job on reviewing all information before writing this book and it definitely shows. This book and series starts out with someone thinking they can cleanse the world, then be able to come back in at a later date, to clean up any remaining people that are sick and rule as they want. But after reading this book, I'm not sure they had planned for all that is going down for the world. With pretty much every Military Installation taken out and much of humanity gone, there may be more than even a person that sick can get back control of. With millions of the human race dead or reanimated, this may be more than even they bargained for. This books deserves more than the 5 star rating, as it grabs you right from the start and keeps you going until the last page. Thank you J.R. Jackson, as this is one book you won't want to out down.
It should come as no surprise that a discounted first book of a series is intended to both introduce the series and "hook" the reader. This one, some disjointed sentences notwithstanding, works pretty well on both counts but with a warning. First, the reader is introduced in the first third of the book to a number of characters, including a rather amusing collection of young men who are ZA-preppers, who completely disappear; the story then shifts to a joint military base in Washington state (JBLM) and remains fixed to that location and its characters. I do not know whether the earlier characters reappear in later volumes. Second, the author's military expertise is on full display; his ability to make it work for a general readership is less so. He acknowledged the problem in a note with a glossary at the end, but while his intent was commendable it didn't work for me.
This series should be spot on for military fans of ZA fiction, but others would be well advised to approach it with caution.
I've been on a zombie apocalyptic kick for awhile now and though I don't consider myself an expert by any stretch of the imagination, I have read enough to know what I like and don't like and I'm sorry to say that I don't like this book.
Fortunately for me I picked it up in format for .99 cents so I'm not out a lot of money, but I definitely will not be purchasing its sequels. I have not invested anything emotionally in any of the characters so I don't care what happens
While waiting for the third installment of a wonderful zombie series I went searching for something new to keep me occupied and entertained. This one sounded promising. In the authors notes he did indeed explain that his novel would contain heavy references to military terminology that would be glossaries. But for a simple reader who just wants to be entertained it reads like a tech manual.
More than once I found myself starting to lighten up and enjoy a section of this novel only to be taken away from the characters and plot and never brought back again. I reached the end of the book not knowing what happened to them. What their fates were. Their situations took place early in the novel. What happened to them? The author just seemed to have forgotten about them. Haven chosen instead to solely concentrate on the militaristic nature of his book, i.e. his soldiers, his base, his equipment. Did the civilians even survive? Will we find out in the second novel? He doesn't even give us a hint. I for one can't be bothered to find out.
Right now, at this moment I challenge you to read "Up From the Depths Denial Measures" and by doing so I believe you will thank me. I say this for two reasons. First, J.R. Jackson writes to elevate the reader to his intelligence level, he does not lower his standards or dumb down his writing. He writes with intelligence and he is extremely knowledgeable about his subject matter. J. R. Jackson’s tactical and military knowledge is so superior to that which is being written anywhere else at this time that upon reading this novel you will have a far better grasp of military technical terms and operations than when you began reading, and ultimately you will understand what it would really take to survive a zombie apocalypse. There may be times you need to refer to the included glossary and that is okay. That is what a glossary is for; it is a learning experience and when you have finished reading "Up From the Depths Denial Measures" you will look back and feel as though you have completed a journey. I believe that is a critical aspect of this novel. “Book 1 Denial Measures” is merely the first step in this epic journey as we are compelled through an amazing cast of characters’ quest for survival in books 2-6. There is no doubt that "Up From the Depths Denial Measures" is every bit the epic masterpiece it sets out to be, and Book 1 is just the teaser. Thank you, Mr. Jackson for believing in our intelligence and for providing the genre with this unforgettable series!
