Hardcore police work for the square pegs in round holes. Exacting detail, great characters, an awesome plot made for an engrossing read. I can't wait for the next one.
I really liked this book. It is first from this author I've read and I plan to buy the next in the series. I especially liked the fact that the book was well written and obviously had an editor. It was a HUGE improvement over some of the other unedited books I've read recently. I enjoyed the story line and it had a few surprises that I totally didn't expect.
Someone is on overwork, could be Special Crimes or is Ms. Aya? Crime by Crime, day by day.
Ms. Aya, works with many characters (hey, there crimes?), bends, twists, lies, truths. That's crime!!!.
The grammar well done, the characters very well define & know when & where to go. Solving every mess with some flair that many authors will like to had.

Sketch of a Murder by Aya Walksfar is book one in the Special Crimes Team series. In this offering, we follow the unit as it tracks down a killer, armed only with little beyond a sketch made by an artistically gifted homeless woman—who is later killed under mysterious circumstances.
The author’s use of point of view—putting us in the killer’s mind—adds to the suspense in this whodunit. There are enough red herrings and subtle clues throughout to satisfy the diehard mystery fan. The ending, which caught me by surprise, was . . . chilling, but satisfying.
A good summer read.
This is a wonderful mystery with many intriguing characters. Ms. Walksfar skillfully weaves this tale from the viewpoints of several members of the investigative team, all the while giving us a look into their lives and their backgrounds. Each of them has a vested interest in finding the person responsible for the series of murders. Their interactions with each other ring true. I want to read more about them.
REVIEW A SKETCH OF MURDER by Aya Walksfar (Special Crimes Team #1)
Usually a task force or special unit is assigned the more difficult-to-solve crimes, especially MURDER, serial rape, and serial killing. In this instance, the Seattle ScAT are assigned a political hot potato by the governor, who wants it solved ASAP. The self-styled "Avenger" targets known or suspected pedophiles, rapists, domestic abusers, and a suspected murderer, for brutal slaughter, taunting the police and media by notes to one particular reporter.
Aya Walksfar, a prolific author, really reaches to the heart of her characters, several of whom are often disagreeable and abrupt, with chips the size of boulders. But all are dedicated to finding this elusive murderer. I particularly enjoyed the approach of using the first person narrative for the Avenger' s viewpoint, with interweaving glimpses of this killer's background.
Each story was very interesting, and I enjoyed the fact that it was in a boxed set, so I could enjoy each one, right after the other. I like Nita and her entrance in the SCaT department. She is an interesting cop, and though she knocks heads with others, she has great chemistry with the other characters. It starts with Sketch of a Murder, which outlines not only the case of the SCaT, but also introduces the members of the team, and Dawn, a reporter. Each book is interesting and becomes its own story. The only thing I was disappointed in, is that some of the wording is too detailed or overly detailed, when a simple, leave it to the reader's imagination would do. Walksfar is a good character creator and the stories are recommended, either as separate or as this boxed set. This set contains street harvest, old woman gone, and Backlash. Each one a well written story.
I purchased read this book in the boxed set, but am posting it on the individual books contained the boxed set.
Sargent Nita Slowater finds herself assigned to a special Governor’s Investigation Team looking into four murders. The victims have something in common.
Other characters, her boss, Dawn, a reporter, Molly a bag lady, and an FBI profiler enter the story, all well-drawn.
It becomes apparent that Ms. Slowater is definitely not slow or passive for that matter. Daniel enters her life.The characters are well drawn, the dialogue authentic, and the action is cop tough.
This story twists and turns and along the way Detective Sargent Slowater discovers then understands mysteries about herself, life, love and most of all, friendship.
